Why is A4 paper called A4 paper? 

First of all, we have to start with paper A. What is A size paper? A-size paper is actually a batch of papers of different sizes, and the numbers carried behind it can be understood as the number of times of folding each other, while A4 paper is actually the size of the paper folded in half for the fourth time of A0 paper. Straightforward name!

How big is A4 paper?

The size specification of A4 paper is 210*297mm, also known as 16K. Generally, paper mills cut paper of 846*1194mm (this size is the size of large paper with the least loss in cutting A4), and a piece of paper of this size is cut into 16 Zhang, so it is called 16K. The double size of A4 is A3, also known as octavo. The rest of the dimensions can be deduced by analogy. As follows: A4 paper size (210*297mm) A3 paper size (297*420mm) A2 paper size (420*594mm) A1 paper size (594*841mm) A0 paper size (841*1189mm).

 

A4 paper - Lichtenberg ratio

The Lichtenberg ratio is 1:1.414. Intuitively, it is not standardized enough, however, it is actually a deep normalization. It is not that any piece of paper is cut in half, and two pieces of paper with the same ratio as the original paper can be obtained, but this is the case for size A paper.

Comparing the length and width of A-size paper of different sizes, that is, A0, A1, A2, A4..., you will find that the ratio of their paper width to length is the same, all of which are 1:1.414. And after cutting A0, you can get 2 pieces of A1, and A1 can get 2 pieces of A2, and so on. It is this phenomenon that makes the A series of paper very easy to use. The pictures drawn on A4 paper can be scaled up to A0 posters in equal proportions. Therefore, as long as you have a certain type of A-series paper at hand, you can make A-series papers of any size.

A4 paper - Silver ratio

I believe everyone is familiar with the golden ratio. Even if you can't tell the specific ratio, you often hear it. The golden ratio of 1.618 can be called the king of proportions, while the silver ratio is 2.414.

 As long as the short side of the A4 paper is the side length, draw a square and cut it off. The aspect ratio of the remaining rectangle is the silver ratio. We can verify that the aspect ratio of A4 paper is √2:1. After drawing a square with the short side and cutting it off, the aspect ratio of the remaining rectangle will be 1: 【√2-1】 = 2.414.

This is the silver ratio hidden in the A4 paper.
